MG 3 Supermini Design Unveiled for 2024 Launch | Giga Gears

The design for the next-generation MG 3 supermini has been unveiled, giving us a glimpse of what to expect from this affordable car. Set to go on sale in 2024, the new MG 3 will draw inspiration from both the larger MG 4 and the new MG Cyberster flagship sports car. While the MG 4 and Cyberster are both electric vehicles, the new MG 3 will stick with petrol power to maintain its affordability.

The exterior design of the new MG 3, as confirmed by trademark filings, showcases a heavy influence from its larger siblings. The car features a lengthy front overhang, a sizeable grille, and a small filler cap at the rear, indicating that it will not accommodate a CCS charger for electric charging. This decision to remain petrol-powered is in line with MG’s commitment to offering affordable vehicles.

Although an official unveiling date for the new MG 3 has not been announced, recent spy shots of a camouflaged prototype suggest that the car is approaching production-ready status. Advanced testing is underway, indicating that we can expect to see the new MG 3 on the market soon.

In the UK, petrol-powered superminis are becoming increasingly rare, with popular models like the Ford Fiesta and Kia Rio exiting the market. Currently, the MG 3 is one of only three petrol-powered cars available for less than £15,000. Its successor is expected to feature mild-hybrid technology to reduce emissions and comply with stricter regulations. This, along with updated interior and driver-assist technology, may increase the price of the new MG 3. However, MG is determined to keep it as one of the most affordable options in the market.

The current MG 3 has been a minor player compared to MG’s compact SUVs, the MG ZS and MG HS. In the first half of 2023, only 2920 units of the MG 3 were sold across Europe. This low sales figure, combined with the high cost of developing a small electric car, led MG to continue with the petrol-powered model. Developing a small electric car is only marginally cheaper than developing a larger one, and the cost of batteries accounts for half of the price, making it unaffordable for the target market.

The current MG 3 is the oldest model in the MG range, having been revealed in China in 2011. Since then, it has received three facelifts and was launched in the UK in 2013 with a starting price of £8695. Despite subsequent price increases, it remains one of the cheapest cars available in the UK. The addition of a hybrid system in the new MG 3 is expected to raise the price further, but it should still stay under £20,000.

In conclusion, the upcoming MG 3 will feature a design influenced by its larger siblings, the MG 4 and MG Cyberster. While these models are electric vehicles, the new MG 3 will remain petrol-powered to maintain its affordability. The addition of mild-hybrid technology will help reduce emissions and comply with regulations. Despite potential price increases, MG aims to keep the new MG 3 as one of the most affordable options in the market. With advanced testing underway, we can expect to see the new MG 3 on sale in 2024.
