Life with an MG 4: Month 1

Welcoming the MG to the Fleet

The MG 4 EV has gained popularity over the past two years due to its ideal size, affordable price, enjoyable driving experience, and comfortable cabin. Unlike other electric vehicles that are primarily chosen for cost-saving benefits, the MG 4 EV stands out for its overall quality and appeal.

When given the opportunity to test the MG 4 EV Extended Range, I was thrilled to experience the 20% increase in battery range, promising an impressive 323 miles of cruising. Additionally, the Extended Range model features a new-spec 241bhp motor, reducing the 0-62mph time to just 6.5 seconds.

The car, a fully-equipped Trophy-spec version in Camden Grey, arrived with approximately 5700 miles on the clock, likely from previous testing by other automotive journalists. Despite its initial use, the MG 4 EV showed no signs of wear and tear, except for a minor mark on the driver’s seat backrest bolster.

Visually, the MG 4 EV’s body and paint were in excellent condition, meeting high manufacturing standards. The only noticeable wear was on the tires, indicating around 25% usage. However, the tall tires and hubcap-shrouded alloy wheels offer good protection against curbs.

Impressive Features and Equipment

The Trophy equipment level, standard in the Extended Range model, includes a range of high-quality features and gadgets. Notable highlights are the quick-acting sat-nav, premium sound system, crystal-clear rear camera, and heated steering wheel. The car also boasts various electronic driver aids, although the lane-keeping assistance system can be intrusive and is best turned off.

Regarding pricing, the MG 4 EV Extended Range Trophy is competitively priced at £36,495, the same as the XPower model with a shorter range but higher performance. Both models offer excellent value for money, especially for PCP customers.

Thrilling Performance and Range

From the moment I started driving the MG 4 EV, I was impressed by its agility and handling. Despite its 1750kg weight, the car feels nimble and responsive. With rear-wheel drive, near 50:50 weight distribution, and well-weighted steering, it offers a balanced and enjoyable driving experience.

Unlike some electric vehicles, the MG 4 EV does not feel overwhelmed by its mass, providing a confident and controlled ride. The only minor complaint is the slightly light brakes. Surprisingly, the ride quality of this £36k MG surpasses that of my previous £110k Audi.

One of the most significant improvements in the Extended Range model is the increased battery range. The fascia predictor has indicated a maximum range of 360 miles, exceeding the WLTP figure. In reality, the car consistently delivers 330-340 miles, providing a significant change in range confidence.

With an average of 4.1 miles per kWh, the MG 4 EV requires less frequent charging, allowing for longer journeys without the need for constant recharging. The car has become my preferred choice for trips, not solely due to cost savings, but also because of its fun and satisfying driving experience.

Second Opinion

During a previous test drive of the MG 4 EV Extended Range in winter, I noticed slightly lower efficiency in cold weather and a less refined ride and handling compared to the Long Range model. However, as this is a longer-term test, I am curious to see how the car performs over an extended period.
