Mini Countryman: A New Generation SUV with Enhanced Features

The Mini Countryman, the largest member of the Mini family, is set to make a comeback with its third generation. This new-generation SUV has undergone significant changes and upgrades, making it a formidable competitor in the market. With its new look and improved features, the Mini Countryman is ready to take on rivals like the Audi Q3.

A Bigger and Better Mini Countryman

The new Mini Countryman has grown substantially in size compared to its predecessor. Measuring 60mm longer and 130mm wider, the Countryman now offers more space and comfort for passengers. This increase in size was necessary to accommodate the upcoming Mini Aceman crossover, which will be twinned with the latest BMW X1.

Stephanie Wurst, CEO of Mini, emphasized the impact of the Countryman’s size increase on its market positioning. With its larger dimensions, the SUV is expected to attract new customers, while the new Mini Cooper hatchback aims to retain existing customers with its subtle evolution.

Exterior Design and Interior Features

The exterior design of the Mini Countryman showcases a clear evolution from its previous generations. It features elements seen in the new Cooper, such as the octagonal front grille, revamped headlights, and taillights. The C-pillar treatment has also been reworked, giving the SUV a fresh and modern look.

Inside, the Mini Countryman offers a minimalist design similar to the Cooper. The dashboard is dominated by a touchscreen display, providing easy access to various functions. The increased length of the SUV has allowed for an enlarged center console with larger cupholders and an additional 130mm of legroom in the back. The backrests are now individually adjustable, further enhancing passenger comfort.

In terms of storage, the Mini Countryman offers 460/1450 liters of boot space, representing a slight improvement from previous models. Additionally, there is an underfloor cubby specifically designed for storing the EV’s charging cables.

Powertrain Options

The Mini Countryman will be available with both petrol and electric drivetrain options. Three petrol engines will be offered, including two 1.5-liter turbo triples and a 2.0-liter turbo four-pot from the X1. The range includes the Countryman C with 167bhp, the S All4 with 215bhp, and the John Cooper Works All4 (JCW) with 296bhp and 295lb ft of torque.

For those interested in electric vehicles, the Countryman offers two electric options: the Electric E with 201bhp and the Electric SE All4 with 309bhp. Both electric models feature a 64.7kWh battery, offering ranges of 287 and 269 miles respectively. Rapid-charging capabilities of up to 130kW are also available for quick and convenient charging.

Advanced Features and Pricing

The Mini Countryman will be the first Mini to offer level-two driver assistance, including hands-off driving at speeds of up to 37mph. This advanced feature enhances safety and convenience for drivers.

Pricing for the Mini Countryman starts at £28,500 for the C model and goes up to £46,600 for the Electric SE model. With a range of interior trims and eight Mini Experience modes to choose from, customers can personalize their Countryman to suit their preferences.

First Ride Impressions

During a recent event, a prototype of the new Mini Countryman was showcased, providing a glimpse into its performance and driving experience. The Countryman shares many underpinnings and powertrains with the BMW X1 and iX1, but Mini engineers have ensured that it retains the signature “go-kart feeling” associated with the brand.

The new Countryman offers improved spaciousness in the back and an enhanced boot space. The dashboard and center console have undergone a significant transformation, with most physical buttons replaced by a large circular OLED touchscreen. The car still ran a prototype build of the infotainment system, but it promises a substantially different experience from the current BMW iDrive system.

On the road, the Countryman delivers a dynamic and engaging driving experience. Its chassis, featuring passive dampers and fixed-ratio steering, sets it apart from the iX1. The vehicle’s firm ride and roll rates make it feel more alive, while still providing comfort for passengers.
