New BMW 1-Series Reveals M Sport Bumper

BMW’s M Division has a reputation for turning its attention to almost every car in the automaker’s lineup, but one model that has yet to receive the full M treatment is the 1-series hatchback. However, recent spy shots of what appears to be an M135i prototype suggest that this could be about to change. The quad-exhaust setup on the prototype, which is typically reserved for full M cars, has raised speculation that the M Division may be planning to boost the M135i’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and bring back the 1M badge last used on the M2’s predecessor.

The prototype in the spy shots is less disguised than earlier test cars, revealing a trapezoidal intake in the new front bumper and less camouflage over the headlights. However, the amount of disguise around the kidney grilles suggests that BMW may be preparing to slim down the tall, ugly grille on the 2023 1-series.

Official BMW paperwork previously suggested that the 1-series’ internal model code would change from F40 to F70 in July 2024, indicating an entirely new car. However, this does not align with what is seen in the spy shots or the timing, as the current 1-series is due for a facelift rather than a replacement. The prototype appears to be based on the current 1-series, with non-flush door handles and the same fuel filler flap. It also has similar doors, although previous spy shots showed a different design for the rear side windows.

It is possible that BMW is planning significant changes that would justify a new model code. The prototype features front-end styling changes and updated tail details, including revised rear lights and a reconfigured lower bumper. However, major mechanical changes would be needed to justify a new code.

The current 1-series shares its front-wheel-drive platform with the combustion-powered Mini Cooper, which is also receiving upgrades to keep it fresh alongside the new electric Mini that sits on a different architecture. Secret BMW paperwork suggests that the 1-series will offer a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, similar to the one used in the Active Tourer 216i, which produces 121 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. The car will also offer 2.0-liter petrol and diesel options, including a successor to the current 302 horsepower M135i, and potentially a plug-in hybrid variant. However, the 1-series will remain off-limits for customers in the United States.

Overall, the spy shots of the M135i prototype suggest that BMW may be planning to give the 1-series hatchback the full M treatment, with a boosted engine and the return of the 1M badge. While official paperwork suggests a new model code for the 1-series in 2024, the prototype appears to be based on the current model, with some significant changes to the front and rear. The car will likely share its platform with the Mini Cooper and offer a range of engine options, including a plug-in hybrid variant.
