2023 Honda Prelude Concept Set to Hit European Markets

Honda has officially announced that the production version of the 2023 Prelude Concept will be available for purchase in Europe. The front-wheel-drive coupe is expected to feature the same 2.0-liter e-HEV powertrain found in the Civic and Accord models. While there are reports suggesting that the Prelude will also be offered in the US, Honda has not yet confirmed this.

Anticipation Builds at Goodwood Festival of Speed

At this month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, Honda will showcase the upcoming Prelude model to generate excitement among fans. The automaker has released images of a striking red coupe, which stands in contrast to the original white concept. Additionally, an original first-generation 1979-82 Prelude will be displayed alongside the new model, highlighting the evolution of the iconic vehicle.

Hybrid Powertrain Details

While Honda has not provided specific details about the hybrid powertrain, sources from Japan suggest that it could utilize the e-HEV system seen in the Civic and US-market Accord hybrids. This setup combines a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle petrol engine with two electric motors to deliver efficient performance.

Focus on Efficiency

Although some enthusiasts may have hoped for a more powerful engine option like the Civic Type R’s turbocharged unit, Honda has emphasized that the new Prelude will prioritize a balance between driving enjoyment and efficiency. The company’s chief engineer, Tomoyuki Yamagami, highlighted the vehicle’s role in Honda’s ongoing commitment to hybrid technology and its electrification strategy.

Future of Hybrid Powertrains

The Prelude Concept made its debut at the Japan Mobility Show and later appeared at the LA Auto Show, hinting at potential availability in the US market. Honda’s dedication to advancing hybrid powertrains aligns with its goal of transitioning to fully electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2040.
