Nissan, a leading car manufacturer, is on the verge of introducing a groundbreaking technology in the form of solid-state batteries. These batteries are expected to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) industry, with Nissan’s future sports cars being the first to benefit from this innovation.

Development of Solid-State Batteries

Nissan is currently in the process of developing a pilot line for solid-state batteries at its facility in Yokohama, Japan. The company aims to launch series-production EVs equipped with this technology by 2028.

Solid-state batteries have the potential to significantly enhance the performance of electric cars. With their higher energy density and advanced technical composition, these batteries offer longer ranges and faster charging capabilities compared to conventional lithium-ion packs.

Application in Sports Cars

Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s global vice-president of product planning, revealed that solid-state batteries could be used in various vehicles. Due to their ability to pack more energy in half the space, these batteries are particularly suitable for sports cars.

Espinosa stated, “You can imagine multiple things, because you can package as much energy in half the space. So you easily apply it to things like sports cars.”

Cost Considerations

Although the cost of solid-state batteries is currently undisclosed, Espinosa acknowledged that the initial cost might be high. However, as the technology matures and becomes more widespread, the costs are expected to decrease. Additionally, the higher energy density of these batteries means that less material is required per battery, making them more cost-competitive overall.

Nissan’s Hyper Force Concept

The production version of Nissan’s Hyper Force concept, which is the electric successor to the Nissan GT-R, is likely to be the first vehicle to feature solid-state batteries. This flagship model is well-suited to showcase the technology due to its compact design and high-performance capabilities.

Espinosa hinted, “You can bring it to small cars, because it will be easier to package in a kei car, or maximize the cabin space in a big SUV.”

With Nissan’s commitment to advancing battery technology, the future of electric vehicles looks promising. The introduction of solid-state batteries in sports cars is just the beginning of a new era in the automotive industry.
