NTSB Pushes for Increased Speed-Limiting Technology in New Vehicles

The NTSB Urges Automakers to Add Anti-Speeding Technology to New Vehicles

Introduction

New cars are equipped with various driver monitoring technologies that can detect driver attentiveness and hand placement on the wheel. However, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) believes that additional measures are necessary. In response to a fatal crash in Las Vegas last year that claimed nine lives, the NTSB has requested 17 automakers to incorporate anti-speeding technology into their new vehicles.

The Deadly Crash in Las Vegas

The tragic accident involved a 2018 Dodge Challenger traveling at a speed of 103 mph. The high-speed collision involved five other vehicles, including a minivan carrying seven passengers. The excessive speed of the Dodge Challenger turned it into a lethal weapon, resulting in multiple fatalities. The driver was found to have drugs in their system.

NTSB’s Recommendations

Following an extensive investigation into the crash, the NTSB has urged major automakers such as BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, and VW to equip their new vehicles with speed-assistance features. At a minimum, the NTSB recommends a speed warning system, but some automakers offer more advanced systems that actively discourage speeding.

In addition to requesting automakers’ cooperation, the NTSB has also called upon the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to mandate speed-limiting technology in new vehicles. The NTSB suggests that the NHTSA include testing criteria for these functions in its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). While the NHTSA is currently reviewing public comments on speed-assist technology, the NTSB remains determined in its efforts and has requested the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to evaluate the impact of risky behaviors depicted in vehicle marketing campaigns.

The Importance of Driver Aids

Although some may be hesitant about additional monitoring equipment in their vehicles, it is undeniable that driver aids play a crucial role in saving lives. As vehicles become more connected, the number of advanced safety features is expected to increase, further enhancing road safety.
