Omoda 5 and E5 Launch: Chinese Car Maker Introduces First UK Cars

Introduction

The Omoda 5 SUV has recently been released in the UK market, offering a more affordable alternative to the popular Nissan Qashqai. This marks the debut of Chinese car maker Chery in the UK, with plans to expand rapidly by introducing three more models and doubling the number of dealerships by the end of next year. Alongside the Omoda 5, the electric E5 has also been launched, showcasing Chery’s commitment to offering a diverse range of vehicles.

Omoda 5 SUV

The Omoda 5 SUV is now available for order, with deliveries scheduled to begin later this year. Priced from £25,235, it offers a competitive option in the SUV segment. The 5 is powered exclusively by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, generating 183 bhp through a seven-speed automatic transmission. Omoda emphasizes its “fashion-derived” stylings and a high level of standard equipment, including LED lamps, 18-inch alloys, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, a Sony speaker system, and faux-leather coverings.

E5 Electric SUV

Joining the Omoda 5 is the electric E5 SUV, starting from £33,055. It features a slightly different interior design and a more aerodynamically friendly front end. The E5 draws power from a 61kWh ‘blade’ battery, offering a WLTP range of 257 miles. It is equipped with a single 204bhp motor and can charge up to speeds of 80kW, allowing for a 129-mile range to be added in just 28 minutes. The E5 does not have a hybrid option available.

Future Plans

Omoda has ambitious plans for the UK market, with the introduction of several new models in the coming years. The mid-sized premium SUV, the 9, and the smaller 3 are set to be launched in 2025, followed by the sleek 7 in 2026. Additionally, Omoda’s sibling brand Jaecoo is also preparing for a UK launch, starting with the rugged and toughened-up twin to the Omoda 5, the 7.

Conclusion

The launch of the Omoda 5 and E5 marks Chery’s entry into the UK market, offering consumers a more affordable alternative in the SUV and electric SUV segments. With plans for further expansion and the introduction of new models, Chery aims to establish itself as a prominent player in the UK automotive industry.
