The Ora Funky Cat Gets a New Name: GWM Ora 03

The Ora Funky Cat Rebranded as GWM Ora 03

Great Wall’s Ora made its entry into the European market last year with its first electric vehicle, the Funky Cat. The car stood out with its unique design, resembling the Porsche 911, and its catchy name. However, starting from January 2024, the Funky Cat will be known as the GWM Ora 03, losing its funky appeal.

Numerical Naming System for GWM Cars in Europe

Not only will the Funky Cat undergo a name change, but all future Great Wall Motor (GWM) cars destined for Europe will also adopt a numerical naming system. The Next Cat, showcased at the UK’s Fully Charged Live show, will be called ORA 07 when it hits the market in 2024. This naming strategy will also be applied to Wey, another GWM brand entering Europe in 2024. For example, the Wey Coffee 01 will become the GWM Wey 05, and the Wey Coffee 02 will be known as the GWM Wey 03. This numerical system aims to provide clarity and consistency across GWM’s lineup.

Trademark Dispute and Global Consistency

GWM’s decision to switch to numerical names aligns with its existing strategy in markets like South Africa, Australia, and Singapore. While it may lack creativity, this approach ensures that buyers can easily understand the positioning of each model within the lineup, regardless of their location or language. Additionally, it coincides with the settlement of a trademark dispute between GWM and Caterpillar, the construction equipment manufacturer.

Is Numerical Naming the Right Move?

While using numbers simplifies the naming process, some may argue that it lacks imagination. Other car manufacturers, such as BMW, have employed this strategy for years. Ultimately, the question remains: Was GWM justified in switching to numerical names, or should they have stuck with a funkier naming system? Share your thoughts!
