Toyota to Replace Engines in Tundra and Lexus LX Vehicles

Toyota is taking action to replace engines in 102,092 Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX vehicles that were recalled in May. The automaker has determined that the only solution is to replace the vehicles’ 3.4-liter V6 powertrains entirely. The recall was initially issued due to the risk of crankshaft bearing failure caused by machining debris left inside the engines.

Free Engine Replacement

If you own a Toyota Tundra or Lexus LX, you have the opportunity to receive a free engine replacement. Toyota is covering the cost of supplying and fitting the new non-hybrid 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engines. This offer is exclusive to owners with non-hybrid V6 engines, as the electrically-assisted versions are not affected by the recall.

Recall Background

In May, Toyota recalled 98,568 Tundras and 3,524 Lexus LX vehicles due to the potential risk of crankshaft seizure. The problem was traced back to machining debris in the engines, which could lead to serious engine damage or failure. Toyota took several months to investigate and develop a plan of action before deciding to replace the engines in the affected vehicles.

Engine Cleaning Process

Toyota first became aware of the issue in March 2022 when an engine failure was reported. After further investigation, the company discovered manufacturing debris as the root cause and implemented a more thorough cleaning process for engines assembled at the Alabama plant. However, this did not address the existing vehicles already on the road.

Warranty Claims and Owner Experience

Despite the recall, Toyota has received only 824 warranty claims so far, suggesting that many owners have not experienced any issues. However, all owners will receive a new engine as part of the recall, regardless of their vehicle’s current condition.
