Peugeot 508 to be Discontinued in December, Making Every Peugeot Available as an EV

Introduction

The Peugeot 508 will be discontinued in December, according to Autocar’s sources. This decision is attributed to the UK government’s introduction of the zero-emission vehicle mandate. Peugeot has chosen to focus on its electric models in the UK, making every Peugeot passenger car available in both battery-electric and hybrid powertrains.

Poor Sales and PSE Sub-Brand

The cancellation of the Peugeot 508 is likely due to its poor sales performance. Since its launch in 2019, Peugeot has only sold around 7000 units in the UK, with fewer than 700 sold last year. As a result, Peugeot will offer the 508 exclusively as a plug-in hybrid in GT trim until its discontinuation later this year. This also means that the Peugeot Sport Engineered (PSE) sub-brand, which includes the 508 PSE, will effectively be dead in the UK.

Focus on Electrification

Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson has made it clear that the company’s priority is electrification. While there were initial plans to expand the PSE line-up, the focus has shifted towards offering more electric cars. Jackson emphasized the importance of building awareness, engineering, and durability in the electric vehicle market. Peugeot aims to attract a younger customer base and raise brand visibility through marketing and sales activations.

Future Plans

Despite the discontinuation of the current Peugeot 508, Autocar has reported that a third generation of the model is in the works. The next-generation 508 will undergo significant restyling and repositioning to enhance its popularity.
