The Porsche 914 Restomod: A Modern Twist on a Classic Underdog

The Porsche 911 may be the go-to choice for restomods, but UK firm Fifteen Eleven Design has taken a different approach with their latest project. They have transformed the often-overlooked Porsche 914 from 1969 into a desirable sports car through the use of a carbon fiber body, a Cayman S engine transplant, and a significantly revised chassis setup.

Originally announced in 2021, the Porsche 914 restomod project is now finally ready for production. While the exterior stays true to the original design, the body is now made of lightweight carbon fiber. Wider fenders have been added to accommodate the 18-inch Fuchs wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 rubber. The 914 also features a redesigned bumper with larger intakes, LED projector headlights replacing the pop-up units, a vented bonnet, and an integrated ducktail spoiler at the rear deck.

Inside, the interior has been upgraded with bespoke leather upholstery and sports seats by Recaro. A wooden gear knob adds a touch of elegance, and a redesigned bulkhead increases the available legroom. But the most important changes lie under the skin. Powering the Porsche 914 Restomod is a modern 3.8-liter flat-six engine sourced from the 987 Cayman S. This mid-mounted engine has been enhanced with steel internals, forged pistons, and a Life Racing ECU, resulting in an impressive output of between 380-400 horsepower (283-299 kW / 358-406 PS). This power is transmitted to the rear axle via a 6-speed manual transmission. In comparison, the original 914 produced up to 109 horsepower (81 kW / 110 PS) with its old 2.0-liter six-cylinder engine.

To handle the increased power, the original 914 chassis has been stiffened with the addition of a tubular chassis and new suspension mounts. The suspension geometry is sourced from the Porsche Cayman, but it is combined with WRC-derived three-way adjustable coilover shock absorbers by Reiger. The brakes have also been significantly upgraded with vented and cross-drilled discs, Porsche Brembo four-piston calipers, and an AP Racing pedal box. Other modifications include a fly-by-wire throttle, a fuel cell with an FIA-compliant bladder, and a bespoke stainless steel exhaust system.

Fifteen Eleven Design is the “classic & prestige” arm of the WRC team Mellors Elliot Motorsport, which has an impressive 12 WRC titles under its belt. This engineering expertise is evident in their restomod projects, including the Porsche 914 Restomod. The company is now accepting orders for this unique vehicle, which is available in both right and left-hand drive configurations. However, the extensive modifications come with a hefty price tag, starting at £350,000 ($442,512).
