Porsche’s Sonderwunsch Division Creates Special 993 Speedster

  • Porsche unveiled a special 993-based Speedster, created by the Sonderwunsch division.
  • The one-off was commissioned by a collector who was heavily involved with the design.
  • This is the third factory-built example of a 993 Speedster in existence.

Porsche showcased its Sonderwunsch program at the 2024 Monterey Car Week with the introduction of a unique 993-based Speedster. This one-of-a-kind vehicle was specially commissioned by a passionate Porsche collector to complete his extensive Speedster collection.

Third Rarity in the 993 Speedster Lineup

While Porsche had previously released Speedster versions of the G-Series and 964 models, the 993 model never received the same treatment, at least officially. Only two 993 Speedsters were ever produced by Porsche: a green one in 1995 for Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s 60th birthday and a silver one in 2001 for comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Now, a third rarity joins the ranks with the introduction of a yellow 993 Speedster owned by Italian-born architect and industrial designer Luca Trazzi.

Unique Design and Technical Components

This factory one-off, crafted by Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program, stands out with its distinctive design and technical features that differentiate it from its predecessors. The project began with a 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, which underwent a complete transformation including a redesigned roof, reworked tail, and fully overhauled interior. The customer played a significant role in the development process, contributing his own drafts and sketches.

Customized Exterior and Interior

The yellow 993 Speedster features a one-of-a-kind rear cover with signature bumps, personally designed by the customer. It also includes a reworked canvas roof, a shorter windshield, retro-inspired conical mirrors, and a Turbo-style body kit with a distinctive front bumper, side skirts, and rear quarter panels. The lighting has been updated with modern four-point LEDs, and the car sits on 18-inch Turbo wheels finished in black with yellow pinstripes. The exterior is completed with a vibrant Otto Yellow paint, custom-developed for the client.

The cabin of the 993 Speedster is adorned with black leather upholstery and contrasting yellow stitching. The seats feature hand-sewn checkered patterns, and the interior includes carbon fiber inserts, illuminated door sills, and bespoke symbols on the power window switches. The car is equipped with the Porsche Classic Communication Management infotainment system, combining a classic look with modern navigation and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Powerful Performance

The 993 Speedster is powered by a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 3.8-liter flat-six engine sourced from the 911 Carrera RS. It produces around 300 horsepower and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The car also features the steering and brakes from the 911 Carrera RS, ensuring a thrilling driving experience.

Debut and Delivery

The Porsche 993 Speedster made its debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in Monterey. After the event, it will be shipped to Europe for delivery to its owner. The price of this unique creation has not been disclosed by Porsche.
