Is Audi Q8 E-tron Facing an Early Axing as Firm Considers Factory Closure?

Audi is contemplating shutting down its factory in Brussels, Belgium, which could result in the early end of production for the Audi Q8 E-tron electric SUV. Originally introduced in 2018 as Audi’s first series-production electric car, the Q8 E-tron received a significant update in 2022, including a new name, revised styling, and a larger battery.

The future of the Q8 E-tron is now uncertain due to a decline in customer demand for electric luxury-class vehicles. Audi is considering restructuring its Brussels facility where the SUV is manufactured. While Belgian law requires Audi to engage in discussions with workers’ council and other stakeholders before making a decision, the possibility of ceasing operations looms.

Audi attributes the drop in demand for the Q8 E-tron to segment-specific factors and emphasizes that its other electric vehicles are not affected. The introduction of new models on the Premium Platform Electric, such as the Q6 E-tron, has contributed to the waning popularity of the Q8 E-tron.

The Audi Q8, a combustion-powered counterpart to the Q8 E-tron, is produced in Bratislava, Slovakia, and remains unaffected by the potential factory closure in Brussels. The Brussels plant faced long-standing structural challenges, including logistical issues and high costs associated with deliveries.

While job cuts are a possibility, Audi has committed to exploring solutions for affected employees during the consultation process. CEO of Audi Brussels, Volker Germann, emphasized the importance of transparent and constructive dialogue in navigating this challenging situation.

As Audi weighs its options, the fate of the Q8 E-tron hangs in the balance, highlighting the evolving landscape of electric vehicle production in the automotive industry.
