Software Malfunction Disabling Electronic Stability Control
Stellantis has been forced to recall more than 1.2 million Ram vehicles in the United States due to a software malfunction that can disable the electronic stability control (ESC) system. The recall affects Ram 1500 models built between October 31, 2017, and February 14, 2024. The ABS module software, sourced from Continental, is responsible for the potential failure of the ESC system, which violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards requiring the ESC to be operational at all times during driving.
Recall Process
Stellantis was made aware of the potential issue on February 15, 2024, and conducted an analysis of ABS control module warranty data, field reports, and customer assistance records between March and April. Following a review by the Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance organization, a decision was made to issue a recall on August 30. Dealers will be notified on September 12, and the affected vehicles will have their ABS control module software updated to rectify the fault.
Extended Recall and International Impact
The recall also extends to 7,299 Mopar ABS modules used as replacement parts. Additionally, approximately 250,000 Ram 1500 models sold in markets outside of the United States are included in the recall and will require a software update for their ABS control modules.
