Powerful V8 Cabrio GT: Aston Martin DB12 Volante

The Aston Martin DB12 Volante: The Most Powerful V8 Cabrio GT

The new Aston Martin DB12 Volante is set to become the world’s first open-top “super tourer,” boasting the most powerful V8 of any cabrio GT currently available. With its uncompromised handling and performance, the DB12 Volante aims to deliver the same exhilarating experience as its coupe counterpart.

To ensure that the Volante maintains its dynamic ability despite having its roof removed, Aston Martin has paid special attention to reinforcing the chassis. The suspension mounts have been made stiffer, with a 140% increase in stiffness at the front end. Additionally, a crossbrace has been added across the engine bay to further enhance rigidity.

Thanks to these revisions, the DB12 Volante boasts 3.7% more torsional rigidity than its predecessor, the DB11. The car retains the DB11’s “K-fold” soft top, which can be opened in just 14 seconds and closed in 16 seconds, even while the vehicle is moving at speeds of up to 31mph.

Despite the addition of the roof and extra chassis bracing, the DB12 Volante remains largely unchanged compared to the coupe version. It is powered by the same Mercedes AMG-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, delivering up to 671bhp and 590lb ft of torque. This power is transmitted through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to the rear wheels.

Although the Volante carries a weight penalty of 111kg due to the additional components, its straight-line performance is only marginally affected. It can accelerate from 0-62mph in a claimed 3.7 seconds, just 0.1 seconds slower than the coupe. The top speed remains unchanged at an impressive 202mph.

Inside the DB12 Volante, the drop-top experience is enhanced by the option of wood-veneer seatbacks that match the doorcards. This creates an extra layer of visual interest when the roof is down, adding to the overall luxurious feel of the car.

Production of the Aston Martin DB12 Volante is set to begin soon, with deliveries scheduled to start by the end of the year. Aston Martin’s next project is to revamp the Vantage, following a similar approach to the DB12, aiming to create a “complete hooligan” according to creative lead Marek Reichman.

In conclusion, the Aston Martin DB12 Volante is poised to become the world’s first open-top super tourer, offering unmatched power and performance in the cabrio GT segment. With its reinforced chassis and uncompromised handling, the Volante delivers an exhilarating driving experience without sacrificing the thrill of open-top motoring. Whether cruising on the open road or pushing the limits on the track, the DB12 Volante is sure to impress. Keep an eye out for this impressive convertible as it hits the roads later this year.
