Ford Mustang SSP Prototype, a Piece of Police Car History, to be Auctioned

One of the very first Ford Mustang SSP prototypes ever built will be up for sale in early January and is expected to fetch a six-figure price. This iconic police car is a true collector’s item.

The Birth of the Mustang SSP

The Mustang SSP was born out of a collaboration between the California Highway Patrol and Ford in the early 1980s. The goal was to create a high-performance police vehicle that could handle high-speed chases. Ford chose the popular Foxbody Mustang as the base for the new police car and made several modifications, including a new engine and transmission cooler, reinforced floor pans, upgraded radiator hoses and clamps, and heavy-duty front suspension.

A Prototype with a Unique History

The Mustang SSP prototype being auctioned by Mecum Auctions not only served as one of the early models of the SSP, but it was also used in the Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC), where police officers are trained in high-speed driving techniques. This car has a unique feature – the antenna is located on the passenger side, unlike most other examples.

A Coveted Collector’s Item

The California Highway Patrol ordered a total of 406 Mustang SSP vehicles. While the exact mileage of this prototype is unknown, it is the car’s story and historical significance that will appeal to enthusiasts and collectors. This particular prototype is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, one of the options offered by Ford alongside a 4-speed automatic. All Mustang SSPs are powered by a 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine.

If you’re a fan of police cars or Mustangs, this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. The Mecum listing for this Mustang SSP prototype will go live in early January, so keep an eye out for your chance to own a piece of automotive history.
