EV Charging Infrastructure

Introduction

The electric revolution is well underway in the United States, with the number of publicly available EV chargers
doubling since President Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021. This growth is a result of the government’s
efforts to expand charging infrastructure across the country.

Increasing Number of Charging Ports

  • The United States now has over 192,000 publicly available charging ports.
  • Approximately 1,000 new charging ports are being added every week.

Government Funding for Expansion

The government has allocated $521 million in funding to add more than 9,200 new chargers. This funding is part of
the $2.5 billion Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program established by the Bipartisan
Infrastructure Law. The grants will support projects in 29 states, the District of Columbia, and tribal areas,
ensuring the expansion of charging infrastructure in rural, suburban, and urban communities.

Projects Across the Country

California, a leader in the electric vehicle market, will receive over $149 million for various projects. One of
these projects includes the installation of Level 2 chargers in all BART managed parking facilities in the Bay
Area. The County of Los Angeles will also benefit from $15 million in funding to install DC fast chargers and
Level 2 chargers at community facilities, park and ride hubs, and curbside light poles.

Other states receiving funding for charging infrastructure projects include Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia,
Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North
Carolina, North Dakota, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Road Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont,
Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Conclusion

The expansion of America’s EV charging infrastructure is a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable
transportation future. With the doubling of publicly available charging ports and ongoing efforts to add more,
electric vehicle adoption is becoming increasingly feasible and convenient for drivers across the country.
