Stellantis Recalls Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s for Airbag Issue

Stellantis is recalling over 300,000 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s due to an issue with side airbag inflatable curtain modules. The automaker discovered that certain vehicles may have airbag inflators with moisture introduced during manufacturing, which can lead to corrosion and potential rupturing of the airbag. This poses a safety risk as inflator material may be discharged inside the vehicle, causing injury.

Incidents and Safety Concerns

Stellantis is aware of five incidents related to this issue, all occurring when interior temperatures exceeded 120°F (48.9°C). While no injuries or accidents have been reported, the company is taking proactive measures to address the problem. They estimate that less than one percent of the vehicles being recalled are affected, emphasizing the importance of safety.

Recall Details

The recall affects certain Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s from the 2018-2021 model years, with nearly 285,000 units in the United States, over 10,000 in Canada, 3,502 in Mexico, and 18,820 in other markets. Stellantis is working on acquiring parts for dealers to conduct repairs, and affected customers can check the Mopar recall website or checktoprotect.org for updates.

Not Related to Takata Airbags

It’s important to note that these recalled airbags are not the same as the deadly Takata airbags responsible for numerous fatalities. Stellantis reassures that the inflators in this recall do not use the same propellant or design as the Takata units, providing additional peace of mind for consumers.
