GM Recalls Nearly 62,000 Chevy Colorados and GMC Canyons Due to Phantom Braking Issue

International Recall

An issue with the automatic emergency braking system in certain GM mid-size pickups has led to a recall of nearly 62,000 units across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. The problem was first identified in China, where a defect with the front camera module was discovered and reported to GM’s Speak Up For Safety program in September 2023.

Identification of Problematic Camera Module

After further investigation, GM found that 46,708 Chevrolet Colorados and 9,047 GMC Canyons from the 2023 model year in the U.S. were equipped with the same faulty camera module. This module was causing the automatic emergency braking system to trigger unnecessarily, leading to what is known as “phantom braking.”

Complaints and Accidents

There have been 234 field complaints related to this issue in the U.S., with four reported accidents, three of which resulted in minor injuries. The suddenness of the problem poses a significant risk of collisions due to trucks stopping unexpectedly.

Recall and Solution

As a result, GM has announced a recall of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon across North America. A software update will be provided to correct the front camera’s calibration and prevent phantom braking incidents. The update will be installed by dealers at no cost to the owners.
