Introduction

Renault has breathed new life into the classic 1970s 17 coupe by transforming it into a sleek and powerful electric vehicle (EV). With a carbonfibre chassis and the same power as a modern Volkswagen Golf GTI, this restomod is a collaboration between Renault and French designer Ora Ito. It is part of a series of reimagined Renault classics that combine retro design elements with modern technology.

The History of the Renault 17

Originally launched in 1971, the Renault 17 was the brand’s first front-wheel-drive coupe. It was based on the popular Renault 12 saloon and quickly became a hit. Now, Renault has given the 17 a modern makeover, turning it into a cutting-edge EV.

A Modern Electric Powertrain

The restomod version of the Renault 17 replaces the original 1605cc petrol engine and front-wheel-drive configuration with a powerful 270bhp electric motor mounted on the rear axle. This electric motor is believed to be closely related to the ‘e-PT-200kW’ motor that Renault plans to use in its most powerful EVs from 2027. While specific performance details have not been released, Renault promises that the output will significantly surpass the performance of the original petrol car, which had a 0-60mph time of 13.2 seconds. Additionally, the restomod’s carbonfibre chassis keeps the weight down to just 1400kg, making it lighter than the Lotus Emira.

A Striking Design

The Renault 17 restomod retains the classic charm of the original while incorporating modern technologies and materials. French designer Ora Ito has given the coupe a retro-futuristic look, with slim rectangular headlights and a thin wraparound strip at the rear. The interior features a 1970s-inspired design, with brown and beige trim and retro lozenge-shaped housings for the screens on a minimalist dashboard.

The Future of the R17 Electric Restomod

The R17 Electric Restomod x Ora Ito will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show next month, alongside the production version of the 4 electric crossover. While Renault has not announced any plans for a production version of the restomod, the brand has been reviving old models as EVs in recent years, such as the 4, 5, and Twingo. Although the market for hatchback-based coupes has declined, there have been signs of a renaissance with the return of models like the Honda Prelude and rumors of a Toyota Celica revival.

By combining the nostalgia of the past with the innovation of the present, Renault’s revival of the 17 coupe showcases the brand’s commitment to sustainable and stylish electric vehicles.
