Why Choose the Renault Clio E-Tech Hybrid?

The Renault Clio E-Tech Hybrid is poised to become the new go-to choice for affordable small hatchbacks. With the demise of the Ford Fiesta, car buyers are seeking a worthy successor, and the Clio is a strong contender. In this long-term review, we will explore the features and performance of this super-frugal hybrid.

Life with a Renault Clio hybrid: Month 1

Welcoming the Clio to the fleet – 20 December 2023

For many years, the Ford Fiesta held the title of the ‘default’ British car buy. However, with its discontinuation, car buyers are left wondering which small hatchback can fill its shoes. While the Vauxhall Corsa and Peugeot 208 have gained popularity, they lack the fun factor that made the Fiesta a favorite. The Volkswagen Polo and other contenders also fall short in terms of excitement. This is where the Renault Clio comes in.

The Clio, despite being around for decades, often gets overlooked. However, in its fifth-generation, it proves to be a talented and value-for-money option. The entry-level version features an 89bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, which offers excellent performance and meets the needs of customers in a difficult economic climate.

On the other hand, my long-term test car is equipped with the E-Tech Full Hybrid powertrain. Priced from £22,695, it boasts a 1.6-litre four-cylinder atmospheric petrol engine, a 24bhp integrated starter-generator (ISG), a 48bhp electric motor, a small 1.2kWh drive battery, and a unique transmission system called the DiscoLocoBox. This transmission, developed by a Renault engineer during the Christmas holidays, offers 14 modes of powertrain operation and provides an engaging driving experience.

The Clio also received a mid-life facelift, introducing the range-topping Esprit Alpine trim level. While some may question the branding strategy, the facelifted Clio looks compact, confident, and features cool new LED lighting patterns. The interior is equally impressive, with a large infotainment touchscreen dominating the space but still retaining physical switchgear for essential functions.

Overall, the Renault Clio E-Tech Hybrid promises an impressive fuel economy of 65.7mpg, making it an enticing option for those seeking a super-frugal and sporty supermini.

Second Opinion

“Yes, I’ve bought myself a new Clio – not the hybrid but the pure-petrol model, for a mere £29 per month. I’ve been a serial Ford Fiesta buyer, but with that gone, the Clio is the heir to its throne as the best small car you can buy. I look forward to swapping notes with Kris.”
