Toyota MR2 Set for Revival as Combustion-Only Mazda MX-5 Rival
Introduction
Toyota is gearing up to launch a small, affordable sports car to compete with the Mazda MX-5 in the next two years. The new petrol-powered 2+2 sports car is part of Toyota’s ‘Three Brothers’ line-up, joining the Celica and Supra.
Development
The new sports car is inspired by the success of Toyota’s GR Yaris, GR86, and GR Supra models. Based on the never-made S-FR concept, the compact coupe has been given the green light for production after more than a decade since its initial concept showcase.
Reviving the Spirit
Toyota’s chairman, Akio Toyoda, aims to revive the spirit of Toyota’s ‘Three Brothers’ – the MR2, Celica, and Supra. With the Supra already back in production and the GR86 filling a similar market space as the Celica, the stage is set for the long-awaited MR2 revival.
Technical Details
The new sports car is expected to be a small, front-engined, rear-wheel drive model with a focus on dynamic agility. It is rumored to be powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 133bhp and 111lb ft of torque, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.
Potential Production
If the new Toyota sports car comes to fruition, it could be one of the lightest sports cars on the market, weighing just 1050kg. Toyota’s commitment to developing synthetic fuels and hydrogen-combustion technology may play a role in the production decision.
Future Unveiling
If all goes as planned, Toyota could potentially reveal more details or even unveil the new sports car at the Tokyo Motor Show next October. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development!
