Rivian R1T Takes on Infamous Stair Step Off-Roading Challenge

The Rivian R1T Faces the Stair Step Challenge

The highly talked-about Stair Step off-roading obstacle recently saw a new challenger in the form of the Rivian R1T. This was the first time that these two electric pickup trucks were tested on the same course, and the results were quite surprising.

Testing Ground: Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area

The Stair Steps challenge takes place at the Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA), known for its various off-road trails and obstacles. The Stair Steps are made primarily of cement to create a slippery and challenging surface. Drivers also have to navigate loose dust and dirt on the course. After the Cybertruck’s attempt at the challenge went public, reactions were mixed.

Some even shared videos of other vehicles, like a 1996 Toyota RAV4, effortlessly conquering the same challenge. Now, a new video showcasing the R1T tackling the Stair Steps from different angles suggests that it had an easier time on the slippery surface.

The Rivian R1T’s Performance

Videos posted on the X Platform (formerly Twitter) show the R1T tackling the obstacle from beneath and above. Similar to the Cybertruck video, there is some initial slippage that the truck has to overcome. However, once that hurdle is cleared, the rest of the challenge seems relatively simple. From a timing perspective, the Rivian takes approximately 33 seconds to reach the top of the hill.

Variables and Expectations

It’s important to note that this test is not scientific, and there are several variables that could impact the results. The Cybertruck does not come with a quad-motor layout, the drivers are different, and the suspension geometry varies between the two trucks. Additionally, the exact trail conditions can also play a role.

The comments following the post reveal differing opinions on the difficulty of the trail. While some claim it is easy, others share videos of vehicles like the Ford Bronco struggling to gain traction. One thing is certain: with the Cybertruck delivery event just two weeks away, we can expect more interesting videos to surface soon.
