MG 5 and Mahindra Scorpio Join Exclusive Zero-Star Safety Rating Club

MG 5 and Mahindra Scorpio

Introduction

The MG 5 and Mahindra Scorpio have recently received a zero-star safety rating from the Australasian New-Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). This places them in an exclusive club as only the second and third vehicles to ever receive such a low rating.

Criticism from ANCAP

The ANCAP chief executive, Carla Hoorweg, criticized both cars for lacking fundamental safety features that have become standard in new vehicles. Hoorweg stated that both brands misjudged the safety expectations of today’s consumers.

Issues with the MG 5

The MG 5 received poor ratings in various tests, including the frontal offset test and full-width frontal test. It also had penalties for exceeding injury limits, hazards behind the dashboard structure, and high loading on the head and neck of child dummies. The MG 5 lacks several safety features, such as seatbelt pre-tensioners, load limiters, center airbag, lane support, blind spot monitoring, and autonomous emergency braking.

Issues with the Mahindra Scorpio

The Mahindra Scorpio received mixed ratings for adult occupant protection in different crash tests. It was also found to lack top tether child restraint points, a center airbag in the front row, and had instances of the driver’s seatbelt unlatching. In New Zealand, a version of the Scorpio is sold with only a lap belt in the center seat of the second row.

Conclusion

The zero-star safety rating for the MG 5 and Mahindra Scorpio highlights the significant safety shortcomings of these vehicles. It serves as a reminder that not all cars offer the same level of safety, even among new models.
