SK On Introduces Cold-Weather Battery to Reduce Range Anxiety

**Innovative Battery Technologies Unveiled at InterBattery 2024 Show in Seoul**

**SK On Introduces Winter Pro LFP Battery**

At the recent InterBattery 2024 exhibition in Seoul, South Korea, leading battery manufacturers showcased their latest innovations for electric vehicles (EVs). Among them, SK On presented the Winter Pro LFP Battery, specifically designed for cold weather conditions to address range anxiety in colder climates. Traditional lithium iron phosphate batteries can lose up to 50-70% of their range at temperatures as low as -4 degrees Fahrenheit (-20 degrees Celsius). In contrast, SK On’s new battery offers a 16% improvement in charging capacity and a 10% enhancement in discharging compared to standard LFP units.

**Fast-Charging Solutions: Advanced SF and SF+ Batteries**

SK On also introduced its fast-charging Advanced SF and SF+ batteries. Building upon the success of the SF (Super Fast) high nickel battery, which could charge from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes, the Advanced SF battery boasts a 9% increase in energy density without compromising charging speed. Additionally, the SF+ Battery further reduces charging time to just 15 minutes.

**Samsung SDI’s Solid-State Battery Plans**

Samsung SDI, a key player in the battery industry, revealed its strategy to commercialize solid-state batteries at the show. The company aims to begin mass production of these advanced batteries by 2027, with plans to achieve nine-minute charging times by 2026 and develop batteries with 20-year lifespans. Samsung SDI’s executive vice president, Stella Go, emphasized the need for technological advancements in battery technology to support the expansion of EVs.

**Collaborative Efforts of Korean Battery Makers**

In collaboration with LG Energy Solutions, Korean battery manufacturers are working together to compete with Chinese battery giants. U.S. officials attended the show to encourage Korean companies to establish plants that comply with the Inflation Reduction Act, highlighting the importance of sustainable battery production practices.

**Conclusion**

The InterBattery 2024 exhibition showcased the cutting-edge advancements in battery technology, emphasizing the industry’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. With a focus on addressing range anxiety, improving charging speeds, and developing long-lasting batteries, Korean manufacturers are poised to lead the way in the EV market.
