Skoda Kodiaq vRS: 268bhp Petrol Power and 4WD | Giga Gears

Skoda is reportedly working on a hot vRS version of its popular Kodiaq SUV. The second-generation Kodiaq will initially launch with a range of powertrain options, including pure-combustion, mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants. However, there is no dedicated performance offering from the start. Nevertheless, Skoda insiders have confirmed that work is underway to develop a successor to the first-generation Kodiaq vRS, which was a strong seller for the brand.

Skoda’s technical development boss, Johannes Neft, remained tight-lipped about the details of the upcoming performance SUV but did confirm that they are actively working on it. The success of the first Kodiaq vRS has demonstrated the demand for a high-performance version of the SUV. The new Kodiaq vRS is expected to launch as early as 2024.

While Neft did not reveal specific powertrain details, he hinted that the new Kodiaq vRS might not necessarily use a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Instead, it is likely to feature a four-wheel-drive system and could be powered by the 268bhp, 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine found in the closely related Volkswagen Tiguan. This engine, derived from the Golf GTI, would provide a significant power boost over the outgoing vRS model.

With such power under the hood and the traction-boosting capabilities of a 4WD system, the new Kodiaq vRS is expected to achieve impressive performance figures. It could potentially achieve a 0-62mph time of around 5.5 seconds and reach a top speed of nearly 155mph.

The new Kodiaq already offers an advanced Dynamic Chassis Controller system, which utilizes twin-valve dampers to enhance cornering performance and stability. This feature would likely be further optimized in the dedicated performance version of the SUV.

Visually, the new Kodiaq vRS will feature a sporty makeover to differentiate it from the standard Kodiaq model. It will include bespoke bumpers, unique wheel designs, and contrasting trim elements. The design cues will build upon the themes established by the new Kodiaq Sportline.

The Kodiaq vRS will cater to a niche market as a sporting family SUV with the option of seven seats. However, Skoda’s sibling brand Cupra has already enjoyed success with the Formentor, its own hot crossover offering. Additionally, Volkswagen is reportedly considering a revival of the full-fat Tiguan R, indicating a growing demand for high-performance SUVs in the market.

In conclusion, Skoda is actively developing a hot vRS version of its Kodiaq SUV. The new model is expected to launch in 2024 and will likely feature a powerful petrol engine and four-wheel-drive system. With its sporty design elements and advanced chassis technology, the Kodiaq vRS aims to cater to enthusiasts seeking a high-performance SUV with practicality and versatility.
