Transitioning to Electric Vehicles

The South Pasadena Police Department has made history by becoming the first law enforcement agency in the United States to adopt an all-electric police fleet. The department has replaced its older vehicles with the environmentally-friendly Tesla Model Ys and Model 3s. This initiative not only promotes sustainability but also showcases the department’s commitment to cutting-edge technology.

Benefits of Electric Police Vehicles

While some may have concerns about the range and practicality of electric vehicles as police cars, there are several advantages to using them. Unlike traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, electric police vehicles do not need to idle to power their equipment, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Additionally, each Tesla is expected to save approximately $4,000 annually on energy costs alone, making them a cost-effective choice for the department.

Modified Teslas for Law Enforcement

California’s Unplugged Performance and its Upfit fleet division have extensively modified each Tesla in the South Pasadena police fleet. The Model Ys have been transformed into pursuit vehicles, equipped with features necessary for law enforcement activities. On the other hand, the Model 3s serve as administrative vehicles. The Teslas will be conveniently charged at a new bank of chargers located at South Pasadena City Hall.

Support from Clean Power Alliance

The South Pasadena Police Department received $1.3 million in funding to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles. In addition, the Clean Power Alliance will install a solar system and battery storage through its Power Ready Program, ensuring that the Teslas can always be charged with clean energy.

Conclusion

The South Pasadena Police Department’s adoption of an all-electric Tesla fleet sets a precedent for other law enforcement agencies to follow. By embracing sustainable transportation solutions, the department not only enhances officer safety and reduces maintenance costs but also contributes to a greener future. This initiative serves as a testament to the department’s commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.
