State Trooper Pursues Honda at 107 MPH into Forest | Giga Gears

Controversial Use of PIT Maneuver by Arkansas State Police Officer

The Controversial PIT Maneuver

The PIT maneuver, a controversial tactic used by some law enforcement agencies to end pursuits, is under scrutiny once again. An Arkansas State Police (ASP) officer, identified as Bob Love, recently employed this maneuver at speeds exceeding 105 mph (168 km/h) against a fleeing Honda. The incident was captured on the officer’s dashcam.

The Safety Concerns

One of the main issues with the PIT maneuver is its potential to escalate the danger rather than reduce it. While different police departments employ various methods to stop chases, none of them guarantee the safety of those involved, including officers, suspects, and the general public. Intentionally causing a high-speed collision, as seen in this case, raises questions about negligence.

The Reckless Pursuit

The ASP Trooper executed the PIT maneuver on a Honda Civic that had evaded a traffic stop. Shockingly, he performed the maneuver after overtaking multiple vehicles on the highway. One of the bystanders stopped immediately after the crash to check on both Love and the suspect. However, instead of appreciating the concern, the Trooper reacted defensively, fearing a potential threat.

Questionable Behavior

Aside from the high-speed PIT maneuver, the officer’s behavior raises additional concerns. In the video, he repeatedly informs dispatch that he is traveling at lower speeds than indicated by his GPS. This discrepancy in speed reporting occurred multiple times during the pursuit. While mistakes can happen in tense situations, it is crucial to ensure accurate information is relayed.

The Need for Backup

Despite claiming that traffic was light, the officer seemed determined to forcefully stop the driver by crashing them into a nearby forest. It begs the question of whether having backup support would have been a safer approach in this situation.

Video Evidence and Police Report

A separate YouTube channel has posted a longer video of the incident and claims to possess the full police report. According to the officer’s alleged statement, the initial reason for pulling over the Honda was a defective headlight.

The Importance of Safety

Fortunately, no life-changing injuries occurred during this incident. However, accidents at lower speeds can still result in significant harm to everyone involved, including law enforcement officers and innocent bystanders. It is crucial to prioritize safety in all pursuits.
