Introduction

Subaru celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Outback nameplate with the launch of a new special edition model in Japan. The Outback “Black Selection” features a dark treatment for both the exterior and interior, paying homage to the iconic Outback moniker.

Exterior Design

The Subaru Legacy Outback Black Selection is based on the flagship Limited EX trim of the pre-facelifted model available in the Japanese market. It comes with black accents and blacked-out features, including the grille, roof rails, skid plates, fog light garnish, mirror caps, and Outback lettering on the tailgate. The special edition rides on 18-inch aluminum wheels finished in dark metallic.

Interior Design

The interior of the Subaru Legacy Outback Black Selection features black Nappa leather upholstery with silver stitching. The seats offer ventilation and heating functions, while the dashboard and doors are also wrapped in leather.

Performance

Under the hood, the Subaru Legacy Outback Black Selection is equipped with a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder flat-4 engine, producing 175 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a Lineartronic CVT.

Pricing and Availability

The Subaru Legacy Outback Black Selection is already available in Japan, priced at ¥4,499,000 ($31,495). It is ¥99,000 ($693) more expensive than the Limited EX trim it is based on. Subaru also introduced the Legacy Outback Active x Black EX trim, priced at ¥4,510,000 ($31,539), which offers similar features and water-repellent seat upholstery.

30 Years of Outback

The Outback moniker was first used by Subaru in 1994 for the crossover version of the Legacy Grand Wagon. In 1999, the Outback became a standalone model in Subaru’s US lineup, and it continues to be a popular choice among customers. The current generation of the Outback was introduced in 2019 and received a facelift in 2022 for the North American market.
