The End of an Era

Suzuki has announced the discontinuation of the Ignis, Jimny LCV, Swace, and Swift Sport models in the UK as the brand prepares to launch its first electric vehicle in 2025.

Transition to Electric

The decision to axe these models is in response to the UK’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which requires manufacturers to increase the proportion of EVs in their lineup over the next decade.

Starting in 2024, manufacturers must sell at least 22% EVs, with the percentage rising to 28% in 2025 and reaching 80% by 2030. Failure to comply results in a £15,000 penalty per ICE car sold above the allowed limit.

Focus on SUVs and EVs

Suzuki UK director Dale Wyatt stated, “The departure of these models will make room for EVs and enable us to compete in a market where hybrid and EV sales will drive our business. We are transitioning from the ICE era to focus on SUVs and the new Swift, with plans for EV growth starting in the second half of 2025.”

This move indicates that the iconic Swift Sport hot hatch, a staple since 2006, may not return in the current model generation.

Future Lineup

With the removal of these models, Suzuki’s UK lineup will consist of petrol-engined cars like the Swift, Vitara, S-Cross, and Across. The brand anticipates similar sales figures for this year as seen in 2023, where it sold 26,574 vehicles compared to 17,378 in 2022.

First Look at Suzuki’s Electric Future

Suzuki has teased its first electric car with the eVX concept, positioned between the S-Cross and Vitara. The vehicle boasts a 60kWh battery providing a range of 342 miles, signaling a promising future for Suzuki in the electric vehicle market.
