Tesla Model 3: Restyled, Enhanced Cabin, Extended Range

The Tesla Model 3, one of the world’s best-selling electric cars, has undergone a significant update for 2024. With more range, improved refinement, and a fresh new look, Tesla aims to enhance the driving experience and comfort for its customers. Over 50% of the Model 3’s components have been refreshed based on customer feedback, resulting in a sleeker design and improved performance.

The updated Model 3, codenamed ‘Project Highland’, has been the subject of much speculation since late 2022. Leaked images and camouflaged prototypes have given hints about the final design, but Tesla has now officially revealed the changes. The most noticeable update is the heavily redesigned front end, which reduces drag and wind noise, ultimately increasing the car’s range.

Tesla has stayed true to the sleek and uncluttered design aesthetic that made the Model 3 a global best-seller. The new-shape headlights and revised lower bumper are the most significant visual changes, while the rest of the car remains largely unaltered. The integration of new C-shaped rear light clusters into the bootlid adds a touch of modernity to the overall design.

In addition to the visual updates, the changes also contribute to improved rolling refinement and efficiency. With the front foglights removed for a sleeker front end and a new air curtain installed at the trailing edge of the reshaped bonnet, the new Model 3 boasts a drag coefficient of 0.219, down from an already impressive Cd of 0.23. This results in a range boost of 5% to 8%, depending on the specification.

The standard rear-wheel-drive Model 3 now has an official range of up to 344 miles, while the Long Range version offers an official range of 421 miles. Charging speeds remain unchanged, with the standard car topping out at 170kW and the Long Range version reaching 250kW. The entry-level car has a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds, while the Long Range achieves it in 4.4 seconds. Both models have a top speed of 125mph.

Functional visual tweaks have also been made to enhance the driving experience. The introduction of aero-optimized wheel designs makes the car 5% slipperier, and improved tire sidewalls and double-glazed windows reduce road noise. The front and rear doors have been structurally reinforced to withstand heavier impacts, meeting stricter crash regulations. This reinforcement also improves the perceived quality of the car.

Inside the cabin, the Model 3 has received a refresh as well. The 15.4-inch touchscreen now has a slimmer surround, and the steering column no longer has stalks. Indicators are operated by buttons on the new-look steering wheel, and the drive selector has become a touchscreen icon. The use of real aluminum for the redesigned center console, upmarket textiles, and elevated levels of execution contribute to an improved cabin quality. The car now features two wireless phone chargers, three USB-C charging ports, and an 8.0-inch rear display with climate control and infotainment functions built-in.

The refreshed Tesla Model 3 will be available in the UK early next year. While pricing details have not been confirmed, it is expected that there will be an increase of between £1000 and £2000 compared to the previous model. The starting price is estimated to be around £44,000, with the Performance version reaching closer to £60,000.

It is anticipated that the Tesla Model Y, a closely related model, will also receive similar upgrades in the future. However, Tesla has not provided any specific timeline for this update. With its range improvements, refined design, and enhanced cabin features, the updated Tesla Model 3 is set to continue its success as one of the world’s most popular electric cars.
