Recall Details

  • Tesla has issued a new recall affecting 9,136 Model X vehicles from the 2016 model year.
  • The issue lies in a potential lack of primer that could lead to roof trim separation.
  • The 2016 Model X has been recalled in the past for similar issues with glass panels.

Recall Background

Tesla has faced another recall, this time targeting certain 2016 Model X vehicles. The recall is due to a faulty primer that could cause the roof trim to peel off. This recall adds to the list of quality control issues faced by Tesla’s flagship SUV.

Previous Recall

In 2020, Tesla had to issue a recall for a different issue involving glass panels on the 2016 Model X. It appears that Tesla’s quality control department needs improvement.

Affected Vehicles

Tesla has identified 9,136 units of the 2016 Model X that could be affected by the roof trim separation issue. The lack of primer on the front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces may cause them to separate and fall while the vehicle is in motion, posing an accident risk.

Investigation Findings

Tesla’s Field Quality team discovered that the failed components did not have sufficient primer at the urethane-to-applique interface when produced by the supplier. This issue is similar to the previous recall regarding glass panels. Unfortunately, the inspection during the previous recall did not detect the potential issue with the roof panels.

Incident Reports

As of August 14, 2024, Tesla has received 40 warranty claims, 6 field reports, and 125 service reports potentially related to this issue. However, there have been no reported accidents resulting from falling roof trim pieces.

Remedy

Tesla will conduct tests on the affected pre-facelifted Model X units to ensure proper roof trim adhesion. Technicians will reattach the roof trim pieces using the correct amount of primer if necessary.

Notification and Contact

Owners of the affected 2016 Model X vehicles will receive notification letters by October 14. For inquiries, owners can contact Tesla customer service with the reference number SB-24-12-008.
