Tesla is making plans to establish an electric vehicle (EV) charging route for its Semi and other electric transport trucks. The proposed route would stretch from Fremont, California, to Laredo, Texas, covering a distance of approximately 1,800 miles (2,897 km). To support this ambitious project, Tesla is seeking $97 million in government funds to create the charging network, which would be the first of its kind in America.

The charging stations along the trucking route would be equipped with 750-kilowatt chargers. These high-capacity chargers are crucial for supplying Tesla’s Semi and its massive batteries with the necessary charging power to keep the trucks moving through four states.

The route’s endpoint in Laredo is conveniently located about 150 miles from Nuevo León, Mexico, where Tesla is constructing a new factory. Additionally, with a claimed range of 500 miles (805 km), the Semi could easily travel from Laredo to Austin, which is only 240 miles (386 km) away, without requiring an additional charging station.

However, the realization of this project is contingent upon receiving government grants. While Tesla has already garnered support from California, it remains uncertain whether the company will proceed with the charging network without these funds. The total cost of the project is estimated at $121 million, with Tesla planning to contribute $24 million if its bid for incentives proves successful.

To make the charging route more appealing to the government, Tesla intends to install eight Tesla Semi chargers and four chargers for other trucks at each location.
