Thornley Kelham’s European RS: A $750k 911 Restomod Inspired by 997 GT3 RS 4.0

Thornley Kelham Unveils Limited Edition Backdated Air-Cooled 911

Introducing the Second Model in the European RS Series

UK-based Thornley Kelham has recently revealed the second model in its family of four unique restomods. This limited edition backdated air-cooled 911 is priced at approximately $750,000 and is limited to just 25 units. With its distinctive RSR-style nose and inspiration from the 993 GT2, this 911 stands out among other retrofied models in the market.

Building on Tradition

Thornley Kelham takes a different approach compared to other companies in the restomod space. While many focus on the 964-generation 911, Thornley Kelham starts with its predecessor, the older 911 model. This allows them to incorporate modern equipment like anti-lock brakes and power steering while maintaining a lighter overall weight. For those who prefer power steering, Thornley Kelham offers an electric power steering system as an option.

Attention to Detail

The backdated air-cooled 911 undergoes an extensive transformation process, including stretching the body to accommodate wider tracks at the front and back. The doors and front hood are skinned with aluminum, while carbon bumpers and a carbon ducktail rear spoiler are added. The entire process takes approximately 2,500 hours to complete, resulting in a fully-finished shell.

Interior and Performance Enhancements

The interior of the European RS 911 features one-piece carbon Recaro buckets, a Momo Prototipo steering wheel, a lightweight climate control system, and re-engineered gauges that resemble the original Porsche design. The base model comes with a hand-built 993-era flat-six motor, offering 385 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. However, customers have the option to upgrade to a torquey 4.0-liter engine with 400 hp or a high-revving 3.8-liter engine that can spin up to 10,000 rpm.

Customization Options

Thornley Kelham offers various customization options for the European RS 911. Customers can choose an adaptive damper system, carbon ceramic brakes, and Michelin Cup 2 tires for track performance. The suspension setup includes bespoke front wishbones based on the modern 911 GT3’s lower arms, along with JRZ four-way coilovers, Eibach springs, and adjustable anti-roll bars.

Exclusive Limited Edition

Thornley Kelham plans to produce only 25 units of the European RS 911. This model is the second in the European series, following the Lancia Aurelia Outlaw that was built in 2021. The company will continue the series with a restomodded Porsche 356 (European SL) and a Jaguar XK (European GT) later this year.

Thornley Kelham’s decision to create a modified 911 was inspired by a commission from an architect who wanted the best 911 on the planet. After four years of development, the architect’s vision became a reality, and now other enthusiasts can experience a similar level of craftsmanship and performance.
