The shortlist for the 60th anniversary Car of the Year (COTY) award is dominated by electric crossovers, with Peugeot, Volvo, Kia, and Renault leading the way.

Peugeot e-3008

The Peugeot e-3008, along with its non-electric counterpart, has been nominated for the prestigious COTY award. Peugeot is aiming to reclaim the crown it won in 2017 with the second-generation 3008.

Renault Scenic

The Renault Scenic, the first car developed under the Luca de Meo era at Renault, is another former COTY winner. It claimed the title in 1997 and is now vying for another victory.

Volvo EX30

The Volvo EX30 is a groundbreaking entry-level model designed to compete in the small SUV segment. Volvo’s only previous COTY win was in 2018 with the Volvo XC40.

BYD Seal

The BYD Seal is the first-ever BYD vehicle to make it to the COTY shortlist. BMW, on the other hand, has never won the award. The new BMW 5 Series, including the BMW i5, is their latest nomination.

Kia EV9

The Kia EV9, a seven-seat electric SUV, follows in the footsteps of the Kia EV6, which was named Car of the Year in 2022.

Toyota CH-R

The Toyota CH-R is the only hybrid model on the shortlist, with the other six finalists being fully electric or offering an all-electric version. Toyota’s most recent COTY win came in 2021 with the Toyota Yaris.

A total of 59 jurors from 22 countries selected these seven cars from a long list of 28 eligible vehicles. The winner of the 2024 Car of the Year award will be announced in late February 2024.

Autocar is proud to be one of the nine European titles sponsoring the Car of the Year award. This prestigious competition has been running since 1964, and the 2024 edition marks its 60th anniversary. The current reigning champion is the Jeep Avenger, which won the 2023 Car of the Year award.
