Top Cars 2023: BMW M340i | Giga Gears

Is the BMW M340i the Ultimate M3 for Everyday Driving?

During our road testers’ Christmas dinner, I found myself defending my choice of the BMW M340i as the most underrated car of 2023. My colleagues were quick to dismiss my nomination, arguing that the 3 Series has always been highly regarded. They suggested I should have chosen a more exotic car like the Alpine A110 or the Porsche 911, or even a hidden gem like the Mercedes S-Class.

While they had a point, I believe the M340i deserves more recognition. The G20-generation BMW 3 Series has consistently received five-star ratings since its launch in 2019, and the 2023 update has only made it better. Every variant of the 3 Series currently on sale is highly rated, and BMW is a regular presence at the annual Autocar Awards.

However, I believe the M340i deserves special attention. Having spent a significant amount of time in the M3 Touring this year, I found it lacking in certain areas. Its harsh ride makes it unsuitable for bumpy country roads, its large wheels make parking in tight spaces a challenge, and its bold styling attracts too much attention on long trips. Additionally, its immense power can easily lead to legal trouble.

In my opinion, the M340i is the perfect everyday M3. It boasts an exhilarating exhaust note, exceptional handling, a comfortable ride on both highways and city streets, and a powerful 369bhp straight-six engine. It offers 75% of the M3 experience, and it would take significant effort to notice the 150bhp difference and slightly softer suspension.

Is it the ultimate Q car? I believe so. It provides just as much fun without the unnecessary attention, and it comes at a more affordable price. The BMW M340i is truly a hidden gem in the world of high-performance cars.
