BMW i4 M50: A Hillclimb Adventure

Introduction

Initially, I wasn’t too fond of the BMW i4 M50. Having driven its lower-powered counterpart, the BMW i4 eDrive40 M Sport, I found it to be a well-balanced and powerful electric vehicle. However, my perspective changed when I learned about a hillclimb event that allowed stock electric cars to participate. I saw an opportunity to improve my chances of success by opting for the more powerful i4 M50.

A Thrilling Drive Experience

During a 600-mile weekend trip to Cornwall, I had the chance to truly experience the BMW i4 M50. From cruising in economy mode to pushing it to its limits on public racetrack corners, the car exceeded my expectations. Despite being heavier in the front, the acceleration was impressive, and the brakes and steering were exceptional. What surprised me the most was the car’s ability to provide a comfortable ride comparable to a petrol BMW 4 Series.

A Unique Ride Comfort

Unlike most electric vehicles that struggle with ride comfort at lower speeds, the BMW i4 M50 rode like a true BMW. It managed the extra mass with ease, avoiding excessive wallowing or the need for stiff springs and ineffective dampers. I would have been more than satisfied using it as a daily driver, but unfortunately, it was sold shortly after my experience.

Overall, the BMW i4 M50 proved to be a remarkable electric coupe with a true depth of character. Its power, handling, and ride comfort set it apart from other EVs on the market. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to keep it for longer, I am confident that its new owner will enjoy every moment behind the wheel.
