Trademark applications are a common way for companies to protect their product names and concepts. However, a recent trademark application by Toyota in Japan has sparked speculation about potential new releases. The application, discovered by members of the Land Cruiser forum, reveals that Toyota has applied to trademark “Land Cruiser FJ,” a combination of two of its most iconic off-road vehicle names. Additionally, the company has also applied for the trademark “Land Hopper,” leading many to believe it may be used for a smaller, more affordable off-roader.

A Land Cruiser Sub-Brand?

Some forum members have theorized that Toyota intends to create a Land Cruiser sub-brand featuring a range of SUVs. However, it’s important to note that Toyota discontinued its flagship off-roader before reintroducing a smaller and cheaper variant. Nevertheless, Toyota has showcased several boxy EV concepts in recent years, suggesting that anything is possible as the industry shifts towards electrification.

The 2024 Land Cruiser

The upcoming 2024 Land Cruiser, known as the Land Cruiser Prado in other parts of the world, will be smaller, less powerful, and more affordable than its predecessor. Toyota offers various configurations for this SUV, which is equipped with a turbocharged hybrid four-cylinder engine instead of the previous V8. While the new generation of the Land Cruiser has been released in other countries, it has also transitioned to a V6 engine, discontinuing the V8 option.
