Toyota and Lexus Recall Over 145,000 Grand Highlander and TX Crossovers

Overview

Toyota and Lexus have issued a recall for a total of 145,254 Grand Highlander and TX crossovers due to a safety concern with the driver’s side curtain airbag. The issue could lead to improper deployment of the airbag, increasing the risk of injury.

Safety Concern

The recall stems from a potential problem where the front portion of the airbag may not unroll correctly and could move outside the driver’s window if it is lowered during an accident. This could result in an increased risk of injury. Additionally, the vehicles may not meet certain ejection headform displacement requirements.

Notification and Fix

As of now, there is no fix available for the issue. However, Toyota and Lexus will begin notifying owners about the problem in August. Once a remedy is developed, a second letter will be sent out to inform owners.

Impacted Vehicles

The recall affects the 2024 Grand Highlander, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Lexus TX, and TX Hybrid models. The standard Highlander is not impacted as it features a different design and surrounding structures.

Sales Performance

The Grand Highlander, starting at $43,320, has been a top-selling crossover for Toyota in the U.S., with 25,136 units sold in the first quarter. On the Lexus side, the TX recorded 9,956 sales in the same period, making it the third best-selling model behind the RX and NX.
