Toyota Develops Fix for Grand Highlander and Lexus TX Airbag Issue
Introduction
Toyota has successfully developed a solution for the defective side-curtain shield airbags in the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX SUVs. This fix will allow the company to end the stop-sale that was issued after the vehicles failed an NHTSA audit in May.
The Airbag Issue
An investigation by the national safety agency revealed that the side curtain airbags of the Grand Highlander and TX did not stay fully inside the cabin when deployed with the driver’s side window rolled down. One corner of the airbag could be pushed outside. Toyota’s engineers quickly replicated the issue and issued a recall notice and stop-sale on June 20 to address the problem.
The Fix
Toyota’s engineers have collaborated with suppliers to modify the anchoring systems of the airbags, ensuring they comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. This fix brings the Grand Highlander and TX back into compliance and resolves the airbag issue.
Repair Process
A total of approximately 154,000 Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX models currently owned by customers will need to be repaired. Additionally, around 4,000 vehicles from dealer inventories will also require the fix.
Impact on Sales
Prior to the stop-sale, the Grand Highlander and TX were selling well in the US. Toyota sold an average of 9,200 Grand Highlanders and Lexus sold 3,500 TXs each month. However, sales of both models declined after the stop-sale was announced. In August, Toyota had to buy back six Grand Highlanders and five TXs.
Conclusion
Despite the challenges faced, Toyota remains committed to prioritizing customer safety. The company has invested in developing a fix for the airbag issue and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Toyota’s focus is on delivering the best experience for its customers and putting its values into action.
