TVR’s Unruly 660bhp V12 Supercar: Giga Gears

Unveiling the TVR Speed 12: A Supercar Like No Other

At the 1996 British motor show, TVR shocked the automotive world with the introduction of the 7/12, a groundbreaking creation that pushed the boundaries of performance. This wild road racer, based on the Cerbera but with a 7.7-litre V12 engine generating 660bhp and 660lb ft of torque, weighed less than 1000kg. TVR chairman Peter Wheeler expressed his seriousness about the car, stating intentions to enter GT racing with it.

The GT racing aspirations were high, with the aim to compete in the BPR Global GT Series against formidable opponents like Porsche, McLaren, Dodge, Ferrari, Lotus, and Jaguar. The Speed 12 boasted in-house styling that was described as eye-catching and wild, setting it apart from other sports cars of its time.

Despite its impressive performance and unique design, the Speed 12 faced challenges that ultimately led to its cancellation. Issues with handling and safety concerns arose during testing, prompting TVR to refund all deposits and halt production. However, the legacy of the Speed 12 lives on, with former TVR engineers announcing a recreation in 2019 known as the TR Speed 12 Turbo.

With a carbonfiber body, chassis, and an Aston Martin-derived 1025bhp V12 engine, the TR Speed 12 Turbo promises to be a modern interpretation of the iconic Speed 12. For those with a million quid to spare and a taste for extreme performance, this recreation offers a chance to experience the thrill of driving a legendary supercar.
