Vauxhall Frontera: Achieving Price Parity Between EV and ICE Vehicles

Vauxhall Frontera

Introduction

Vauxhall, the UK-exclusive twin of Opel, has announced the pricing for the new Frontera SUV, with a notable twist. Both the Electric and Hybrid versions of this SUV are priced from £23,495 ($31,026) in Britain, marking a first in achieving price parity between EV and ICE vehicles.

Pricing Details

  • The new Vauxhall Frontera begins at £23,495 (approximately $31,000) in the UK.
  • This price applies equally to both the mild hybrid and the fully electric powertrain options.
  • In other markets, the Opel Frontera Electric is priced higher than its ICE counterpart.

Features and Trims

The UK Frontera lineup includes two trims. The entry-level Design model features 16-inch black or white steel wheels and “black grained bumpers.” The GS flagship trim upgrades to 17-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights, silver skid plates on body-colored bumpers, and a black roof and badges.

Interior

Both trims feature the Pure Panel digital cockpit with dual 10-inch displays. The GS trim upgrades with auto climate control and Intelli-Seat front seats. The seven-seat configuration is only available with the GS trim, reducing the boot space to 460 liters (16.2 cubic feet) in the standard five-seater.

Powertrain Options

The mild-hybrid variant combines a turbocharged 1.2-liter engine with a 28 hp electric motor integrated into a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. It offers two power levels: 99 hp (74 kW / 100 PS) or 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS), both boosted by the e-motor.

The fully electric Frontera has a single electric motor producing 111 hp (83 kW / 113 PS) or 154 hp (156 PS / 115 kW). The former is combined with a smaller 44 kWh battery offering 300 km (186 miles) of range, while the latter gets a 54 kWh battery pack and 400 km (249 miles) of range.

Price Comparison

Typically, fully electric vehicles are about 31 percent pricier than their ICE counterparts. However, Vauxhall has managed to eliminate this premium for the Frontera, setting both powertrain options at the same price. In markets like Germany, the base-spec Opel Frontera Electric carries a significantly higher price tag than its hybrid counterpart, the Opel Frontera Hybrid.

Conclusion

The Vauxhall Frontera SUV breaks new ground by achieving price parity between EV and ICE vehicles. With its affordable pricing and range of powertrain options, it offers a compelling choice for customers in the UK market.
