Viritech’s Hydrogen Unit Powers Vehicles

Viritech Introduces Plug-and-Play Hydrogen Powertrain Module for FCEVs

Revolutionizing Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

Viritech, a UK-based technology firm, has launched a groundbreaking “ready-to-run” powertrain module designed to accelerate the development of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). This innovative off-the-shelf powertrain module includes all essential components and is versatile for use in a wide range of vehicles, from cars to light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and off-highway applications.

The VPT60N: A Highly Configurable Powertrain Solution

The VPT60N module is described as “highly configurable” and features a fuel cell, hydrogen tank, battery pack, electric motor, and transmission – everything needed to power a vehicle using hydrogen. This solution is targeted at OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, and research organizations involved in the development of FCEVs.

Customizable for Various Applications

Initially offered in non-homologated form for prototype use, the VPT60N can be further developed and integrated into fully homologated FCEV products with the assistance of Viritech’s engineering team. The battery pack and hydrogen tanks are available in both standardized and bespoke forms to ensure compatibility with any type of vehicle.

Key Features of the VPT60N Powertrain Module

The VPT60N includes a 60 kW fuel cell connected to a 350 bar hydrogen storage system with a capacity of 6 kg. It also features a 16 kWh battery pack (400V) with a management system and cooling components. The Tri-Volt energy management system dynamically adjusts the power split between the fuel cell and battery based on driving conditions. The electric powertrain, consisting of the inverter and drive unit, delivers up to 268 hp and 4,100 Nm of peak axle torque.

Future Developments and Partnerships

Viritech plans to expand its range of FCEV powertrains in the future, with collaborations such as the development of an FCEV version of the BAC Mono sports car with Briggs Automotive Company. The company’s commitment to innovation was showcased in 2022 with the unveiling of the hydrogen-powered Pininfarina-designed Apricale supercar, signaling a new era in sustainable automotive technology.

Conclusion

Viritech’s plug-and-play hydrogen powertrain module represents a significant advancement in the field of FCEVs, offering a comprehensive solution for manufacturers and researchers looking to embrace hydrogen fuel cell technology. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, Viritech is driving the future of clean transportation.
