Why I’m Not a Fan of Convertibles
Convertibles have never been my cup of tea. The thought of wind messing up my hair, the sun scorching my face, outside odors infiltrating my car, and annoying noises overpowering my music has always deterred me from owning one. Currently, I am the proud owner of an R129 SL, which I have never taken the hardtop off and rarely drive with the windows down. However, my aversion to convertibles goes beyond personal preference.
The Downsides of Convertibles
1. Hair Troubles
One of the main reasons I dislike convertibles is the havoc they wreak on my hair. The wind gusts through the open top, causing my carefully styled hair to become disheveled within seconds. It’s a constant battle to maintain a presentable appearance.
2. Sunburn Woes
Another issue I face with convertibles is the risk of sunburn. Without a solid roof to shield me from the sun’s rays, I am left exposed to its harmful effects. Even with sunscreen, prolonged exposure can lead to painful burns and long-term damage.
3. Unpleasant Odors
Driving with the top down means inviting outside smells into the car. Whether it’s exhaust fumes, garbage odors, or other unpleasant scents, they can quickly ruin the driving experience and make it difficult to enjoy the journey.
4. Noise Disturbances
Convertibles are notorious for their lack of sound insulation. This means that road noise, honking horns, and other external sounds are amplified, making it challenging to have a peaceful and quiet drive. It can be especially frustrating when trying to listen to music or have a conversation.
My Personal Experience
My R129 SL has been my faithful companion for years, but I have never felt the need to remove its hardtop. The comfort and tranquility that comes with having a closed roof far outweigh any desire I may have to experience the open-air driving sensation. I prefer to enjoy my music without interruptions and arrive at my destination with my hair intact.
In conclusion, while some may find joy in the freedom and exhilaration of driving a convertible, it is not for everyone. The downsides of windblown hair, sunburn, unpleasant odors, and noise disturbances make convertibles a less appealing option for individuals like myself. I will continue to appreciate the closed-roof driving experience and leave the convertibles to those who enjoy them.
