Volvo EM90: A Luxurious Electric MPV with Unmatched Comfort and Range

Introduction

Volvo has unveiled its first-ever MPV, the luxurious Volvo EM90. This electric vehicle aims to provide a “comfortable living room experience” and boasts an impressive range of over 450 miles. With its advanced technology and high-end features, the EM90 competes with rivals such as the Lexus LM and Mercedes V-Class.

Spirit of Versatility

The Volvo EM90 is designed primarily for the Chinese market and is based on Zeekr’s 009 MPV. However, it features its own unique interior and exterior design that aligns with Volvo’s lineup. The EM90 embodies the concept of versatility, which has been a hallmark of Volvo’s range for the past 70 years. It draws inspiration from the iconic 1953 Duett estate, reflecting Volvo’s commitment to adaptability.

Impressive Performance and Range

The EM90 is equipped with a powerful 116kWh battery, providing a range of 458 miles on China’s CLTC testing cycle. It can be charged from 10% to 80% capacity in less than 30 minutes. The rear axle houses a 268bhp motor, enabling the EM90 to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 8.3 seconds. While Volvo has not confirmed if the twin-motor powertrain option will be available, it would double the power output and significantly reduce the acceleration time.

Luxurious Interior

The EM90 offers opulence and rolling refinement with its top-notch sound isolation, road noise cancellation technology, dual-chamber air suspension, and “silent” tires. The six-seater configuration features armchair-style lounge seats in the middle row and conventional seats in the rear. The middle-row seats are adjustable, heated, and ventilated, with folding tray tables and individual haptic control panels. A 15.6-inch screen folds down from the ceiling, providing entertainment and connectivity options.

Advanced Functionality

The EM90’s voice assistant offers advanced functionality, allowing users to transform the interior into a theater, meeting room, or bedroom with a single command. Screens, seats, windows, air-conditioning, and lighting adjust accordingly. The front cabin features a minimalist dashboard with a 15.4-inch infotainment screen and a separate driver display interface.

Availability and Future Plans

The Volvo EM90 is currently available for pre-order in China. Volvo has not disclosed plans for its availability in other markets but stated that it will assess the demand for MPVs worldwide before expanding its launch. While Volvo’s UK lineup consists solely of SUVs, the success of the Lexus LM in the UK market indicates the potential viability of high-end people carriers like the EM90.
