Volvo EX90: A Technological Trailblazer for Volvo’s Electric Future

Volvo EX90 review 2024 01 front cornering

Volvo is set to introduce a new seven-seat SUV, the Volvo EX90, to its showrooms. This all-electric model will serve as a technological trailblazer for Volvo’s ambitious plan to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2030.

The Volvo XC90, the oldest car on sale in the UK, has remained popular even with the arrival of the second-generation model in 2014. The XC90 set the stage for Volvo’s successful era under Geely ownership, showcasing new platforms, engines, and styling. With the EX90, Volvo aims to continue this legacy and push forward into the future.

Unlike its predecessor, the EX90 is not simply an electric version of the XC90. It features a new bespoke architecture for electric cars called SPA2, which incorporates the latest EV technology. This includes a powerful 111kWh (gross) battery located in the floor and twin motors for all-wheel drive, delivering up to 510bhp. However, the true highlight of this new platform is its advanced computing power, which Volvo takes great pride in. As the automotive industry evolves, computing power will become a crucial battleground for car manufacturers.

While the XC90 and EX90 will coexist for now, the EX90 represents Volvo’s vision for the future. As Volvo continues its journey towards an all-electric lineup, the EX90 sets the tone for the brand’s upcoming models, showcasing the cutting-edge technology and features that will define Volvo’s electric cars in the years to come.
