Price Hike and Missing Features

  • Volvo increases price of EX90 electric SUV after initial announcement.
  • EX90 will launch with missing features, to be added via future updates.
  • Some Volvo retailers believe the price hike will prompt buyers to cancel orders.

Volvo has recently raised the price of the all-electric EX90 SUV in the U.S. to over $81,000. This price increase comes even before the vehicle has been delivered to customers. Additionally, Volvo has revealed that the local models of the EX90 will lack several safety features at launch.

Reasons for Price Increase

When initially announced, Volvo stated that the EX90 would start at $77,990 in the U.S. However, the price has been raised to $81,290, including a $1,295 destination charge. This increase of $3,300 is attributed to higher material costs. Joe Origoni, Volvo Car USA’s head of customer care, confirmed that the price adjustment was implemented on May 1.

Delayed Features

Aside from the price increase, the U.S.-built EX90s will also launch without a LiDAR and two unspecified driver-assistance programs. Additionally, bidirectional charging will not be initially supported. However, Volvo has assured customers that these missing features will be added through software updates during the “early ownership” period.

Customer Understanding and Retailer Concerns

Volvo’s CEO, Jim Rowan, stated that customers who invest in advanced technology products like the EX90 understand the concept of over-the-air software updates and the benefits they bring. However, some Volvo retailers believe that the price hike may lead to order cancellations, as potential buyers may reconsider their decision due to economic uncertainties and upcoming elections.
