Volvo XC40: Retaining Youthful Appeal in its Golden Years

Introduction

As Volvo’s breakthrough compact model, the Volvo XC40 has proven to be a transformative car for the brand. Despite nearing its replacement, this compact SUV continues to be Volvo Cars’ second best-selling global model in 2023, surpassed only by the mid-sized Volvo XC60. With the introduction of the Volvo EX30, Volvo is renewing its focus on the more affordable segment of the European car market. However, it was the XC40 that first showcased the potential of a compact Volvo to win over fans and find homes when it was launched in 2017 – and it still does.

Design Breakthrough

Volvo’s timing with the introduction of the XC40 coincided with the booming compact SUV market in Europe. However, it was the car’s design that truly captured attention. Unlike previous smaller models from Volvo, the XC40 aimed to maximize the brand’s characteristic visual toughness and solidity in a smaller and more affordable car. This approach unlocked untapped sales potential and contributed to the car’s commercial success.

Evolution and Changes

Like most successful cars, the XC40 has undergone significant development and changes within its first model generation. Initially launched with conventional petrol and diesel engines, it later introduced a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain known as the XC40 Twin Engine in 2019. These plug-in hybrids were later renamed XC40 Recharge, which became slightly confusing when Volvo added all-electric models to the XC40 range under the same name. However, in recent years, Volvo has rationalized the XC40 lineup by removing diesel models from UK pricelists in 2020 and discontinuing plug-in hybrids during the car’s most recent facelift in 2023. As a result, only mild hybrid petrol and fully electric ‘BEV’ Recharge versions of the XC40 remain.

Testing the XC40 Recharge

For this review, we opted to test the XC40 Recharge single motor, which underwent significant mechanical changes for 2023. The XC40 Recharge represents Volvo’s commitment to electric mobility and showcases the brand’s dedication to sustainability.

Conclusion

As the Volvo XC40 reaches its golden years, it continues to retain its youthful appeal. Its breakthrough design and constant evolution have contributed to its success in the compact SUV market. With the XC40 Recharge leading the way in electric mobility, Volvo is poised to maintain its position as a leader in the automotive industry.
