“Volvo XC90: New Petrol Model Revealed as Company Hints at ICE Sales Beyond 2030”

Volvo Unveils New Petrol XC90 with Design and Technology Updates

Introduction

Volvo has announced significant changes to its highly successful XC90 SUV, including design and technology updates inspired by its new electric EX90 sibling. The XC90 has been a popular luxury SUV since its launch in 2014, with close to a million units sold. This new version builds on the success of its predecessor, retaining the same platform and offering a choice of plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid powertrains. These updates come as Volvo seeks flexibility in the transition to electric cars.

Continued Hybrid Sales After 2030

While Volvo had previously committed to selling only electric vehicles from 2030, CEO Jim Rowan has hinted that the company may continue to sell hybrid models after that date. Rowan emphasized the importance of providing products that customers want and being ready to go fully electric when the market infrastructure and customer acceptance are in place. The new XC90 and EX90 will offer customers options that suit their needs and provide Volvo with a balanced portfolio as it transitions to full electrification.

Powertrain Options

The XC90 range will be led by the T8 PHEV, which combines a 306bhp four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with a 143bhp electric motor. This plug-in hybrid offers an electric-only range of 44 miles and can be fully charged in approximately three hours. The XC90 will also be available with two mild-hybrid powertrains, the B5 and B6, which use a four-cylinder turbo petrol engine paired with an integrated starter-generator. Volvo has optimized the fuel efficiency of these engines using the Miller combustion cycle.

Enhanced Design and Technology

The new XC90 features a restyled exterior that aligns it with the EX90 and other recent Volvo models. The updates include a revised engine grille, ‘Thor’s hammer’ headlights, new wheels, and updated rear lights. Inside, the cabin has been redesigned with a new horizontal layout and the use of textured materials. The center console now includes a ‘2+1’ cupholder and a wireless smartphone charger. The most significant change is the introduction of an 11.2-inch touchscreen with higher resolution and Google-based software for over-the-air updates.

Improved Ride and Comfort

Volvo has enhanced the XC90’s ride comfort by adding extra sound insulation and revising the suspension. The new model features a double-wishbone arrangement at the front, an integral link at the rear, and frequency-selective damping. Electronically controlled air suspension remains an option, providing improved stability and comfort.

Availability and Pricing

Production of the new XC90 is scheduled to begin later this year, with deliveries expected before the end of the year in select markets. Pricing for the UK market has not been announced yet, but the current model starts at £69,435 for the mild-hybrid version and £71,405 for the plug-in hybrid variant.
